Can & Basic Modal Verbs
सकना और आधारभूत भाव-क्रियाएँ
'Can' behaves nothing like a regular English verb — it never takes -s, never needs 'to', and pushes the real action verb after it, echoing the shape of Hindi's सकना construction, though सकना adds a gender agreement English's 'can' never bothers with.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
can + bare verb ≈ Hindi's action-verb-then-सकना pattern
I can swim. (can, then the plain verb 'speak/swim', no 'to')
मैं तैर सकता हूँ। (the action तैर comes first, and the ability marker सकता हूँ follows it)
Hindi expresses ability by putting the action verb (तैर, 'swim') first and the ability marker (सकना, conjugated as सकता/सकती/सकते) right after it, both sitting toward the end of the sentence. English's can works on a related principle in reverse order: can takes the normal verb-position slot, and the real action verb that follows it stays in its plain, unchanged form (swim, not swims or to swim) — can never takes -s even for he/she/it, and never pairs with 'to'. Treat can plus a bare verb as a fixed two-word unit, the same way तैर सकना functions as a unit in Hindi.
सकता/सकती agrees with gender — 'can' never changes at all
I can, you can, he can, she can, we can — always the identical word 'can'
मैं तैर सकता हूँ (male speaker) / मैं तैर सकती हूँ (female speaker) — सकना shifts with the subject's gender
Hindi's सकना conjugates like a regular verb, changing its ending for gender and number (सकता for a masculine subject, सकती for feminine, सकते for masculine plural). English's can is the opposite extreme: it is completely invariant, with the exact same three letters used for I, you, he, she, we, and they, and no separate form exists at all. Since Hindi already trains you to expect verb agreement here, the discipline required is the reverse one — deliberately not changing 'can' no matter who the subject is.
