For something decided in advance, Hindi tends to shift away from the plain future suffix and toward the करने वाला/वाली हूँ construction — literally 'I am about to call her', signaling the plan was already set before this moment. This tracks English's going to closely: both languages have a dedicated form for a prior plan, distinct from the form used for spontaneous, in-the-moment decisions. So your Hindi instinct for when वाला हूँ feels more natural than the plain suffix is actually a fairly reliable guide to when English wants going to over will.
