There is / There are (existência)

Para dizer que algo existe, o português usa 'há' ou 'tem', formas que não mudam com o número. O inglês exige duas palavras e escolhe entre singular e plural conforme o que vem depois.

Há um livro sobre a mesa. / Há dois livros sobre a mesa.

A forma escolhida acompanha o substantivo que vem logo em seguida: 'there is' para singular, 'there are' para plural. A palavra 'there' aqui não significa 'ali' — é apenas um elemento obrigatório no início da construção, então não procure tradução para ela e memorize 'there is/there are' como um bloco equivalente a 'há'. Cuidado com o 'tem' informal do português: 'Tem um livro na mesa' nunca vira 'Has a book', e sim 'There is a book'.
