Negation: ne...pas and Beyond

Negation: ne...pas and Beyond

sentence-structure.json already introduced ne...pas as French's signature two-part negation. Here's the fuller family of negative expressions built on the same wrap-around pattern, plus a very common spoken-French shortcut.

The ne...X family

French

ne...jamais (never), ne...rien (nothing), ne...personne (no one), ne...plus (no more/no longer)

English

never, nothing, no one, no more/no longer

All of these follow the same sandwich pattern as ne...pas: ne comes right before the conjugated verb, and the second piece comes right after it. Je ne bois jamais de café ('I never drink coffee'), Je ne vois rien ('I see nothing'), Je ne connais personne ici ('I don't know anyone here'), Je n'ai plus faim ('I'm not hungry anymore'). English negates these ideas with a single word each (never, nothing, no one, no more) with no wraparound structure at all — so keep reminding yourself to bracket the verb from both sides in French, rather than reaching for one negative word the way English does.

Dropping ne in casual speech

French

J'sais pas. (spoken, = Je ne sais pas — 'I don't know')

English

informal spoken French often drops 'ne' entirely

In fast, informal spoken French, native speakers very often drop ne entirely and rely on pas (or rien, jamais, etc.) alone to signal negation: J'sais pas instead of Je ne sais pas. This is genuinely how French is spoken day-to-day, but it's considered too casual for writing or formal contexts — a bit like how English 'don't' is a completely normal contraction of 'do not' in speech and writing alike, but dropping ne in French carries a stronger informal-register flag than English contractions do. Recognize it when you hear it, but keep writing the full ne...pas yourself until you're deep into informal register.
