Basic Jobs & Occupations
Stating your profession in German drops the article entirely — "I am teacher," not "I am a teacher" — one of the few places German is actually simpler than English.

No article before an unmodified profession
Ich bin Lehrer. (I am a teacher.) — NOT Ich bin ein Lehrer.
I am a teacher.
English always needs the indefinite article before a singular profession ("I am A teacher"). German drops ein/eine entirely when stating a profession, nationality, or religion after sein, as long as the noun isn't further described: Ich bin Lehrer, Ich bin Amerikaner. The article reappears only if you add a descriptive adjective: Ich bin EIN guter Lehrer (I am a good teacher). This is a rare case of German being more minimal than English, and the reverse mistake — inserting ein out of habit — is extremely common among English speakers.
Most professions have distinct masculine/feminine forms
der Lehrer / die Lehrerin (male/female teacher)
the teacher (male) / the teacher (female)
English uses the same word "teacher" regardless of gender. German profession nouns almost always come in matched pairs: the masculine base form, and a feminine form built by adding -in (often with an umlaut added too: der Arzt → die Ärztin, doctor). You need to learn both forms for each profession you want to describe accurately.
