Making Requests & Invitations

Making Requests & Invitations

Polite requests in German lean on the subjunctive-flavored könntest/möchtest forms — softer versions of "can" and "want" that work like English's "could you" and "would you like".

Grammar Comparison

könntest du...? — a politer 'can you'

German

Könntest du mir helfen? (Could you help me?)

English

Could you help me?

Just as English softens a blunt "Can you help me?" into the more polite "Could you help me?", German has a parallel softened form: könntest (from können, "can") instead of the plain kannst. This -te- pattern is a small preview of the Konjunktiv II mood you'll study formally later — for now, just learn könntest du...? as a ready-made polite request formula, the direct equivalent of English "could you...?"

Möchtest du...? for invitations

German

Möchtest du mitkommen? (Would you like to come along?)

English

Would you like to come along?

möchtest (the du-form of möchte, "would like") is the standard way to extend an invitation politely, matching English "would you like to...?" almost exactly in both structure and level of formality. Note mitkommen is a separable verb, so kommen splits and mit- lands at the end: Möchtest du mitkommen?
