Lesson 26.52A2

Describing a Picture

Describing a Picture

German picture-description tasks follow a fixed formula that leans on the impersonal man and the location vocabulary from the two-way-preposition lessons, rather than starting from 'I see'.

Auf dem Bild sieht man... — the fixed opener

German

Auf dem Bild sieht man eine Familie im Park. (In the picture, you can see a family in the park.)

English

In the picture, you can see a family in the park.

German picture-description tasks have a standard formula: Auf dem Bild sieht man... / Auf dem Foto ist... ('In the picture, one sees...'), using the impersonal man rather than 'I see' — describing what's objectively visible rather than your personal perception. Starting with this fixed phrase is expected exam technique, not just one option among many.

Location words + dative for describing where things are

German

Im Vordergrund steht ein Baum. Im Hintergrund sieht man Berge.

English

In the foreground there's a tree. In the background you can see mountains.

Vordergrund/Hintergrund/Mitte ('foreground/background/middle') combine with im (in dem, dative) since you're describing static position, following the same wo?-triggers-dative rule from the two-way prepositions lesson.
