Telling Time
समय बताना
German time expressions have the same trap for Hindi speakers as for English speakers: "halb zehn" doesn't mean 10:30, it means 9:30 — German counts toward the coming hour, not from the previous one.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
halb + the next hour, not the previous one — the reverse of Hindi's साढ़े
halb zehn = 9:30 ("half toward ten"), not "half past ten"
साढ़े नौ (9:30)
Hindi's "साढ़े नौ" counts half an hour forward from 9:00 — just like English "half past nine". German halb zehn counts backward: half an hour before 10:00 — that is, halfway toward ten o'clock, not halfway past nine. This trap is just as dangerous for Hindi speakers as for English speakers: hearing "zehn", don't assume it's around ten o'clock — it actually marks 9:30. The moment you hear halb, subtract one from the stated hour.
Viertel nach / vor: like सवा/पौने, but in reverse order
Viertel nach neun (9:15) / Viertel vor zehn (9:45)
सवा नौ / पौने दस
Hindi uses सवा (fifteen minutes after) and पौने (fifteen minutes before), exactly matching nach ("after") and vor ("before") here — just remember that 'पौने दस' in Hindi already points toward the next hour (दस), exactly like German's Viertel vor zehn. This part isn't as much of a trap as halb, since both languages' logic lines up. In official/written contexts (train schedules, TV listings), the 24-hour clock plus "Uhr" is used, like 21:15 Uhr, which sidesteps the halb confusion entirely.
