Lesson 49B2

Two-Part Connectors: einerseits...andererseits

दो-हिस्सों वाले संयोजक: einerseits...andererseits

German formally weighs two sides of an idea with einerseits...andererseits ('on the one hand...on the other hand') — a structured pair distinct from the double conjunctions (sowohl...als auch, weder...noch) learned at B1.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Each half is its own independent main clause, verb-second both times

German

Einerseits ist die Stadt teuer, andererseits gibt es viele Jobs. (On the one hand the city is expensive, on the other hand there are many jobs.)

Hindi

एक तरफ़ शहर महँगा है, दूसरी तरफ़ यहाँ बहुत नौकरियाँ हैं।

Unlike most subordinating conjunctions in this course, einerseits and andererseits don't build a subordinate clause at all — each just fills the first slot of its own main clause, so the verb comes right after it in second position (ist, gibt). There's no verb-final trap here; just remember that einerseits/andererseits themselves count as one whole clause element, so the subject comes after the verb, not before.

Built from ein/ander- + Seite ('side') — and it has everyday synonyms too

German

zum einen ... zum anderen; auf der einen Seite ... auf der anderen Seite

Hindi

एक बात तो यह...दूसरी यह; एक तरफ़...दूसरी तरफ़

einerseits is literally 'in-one-side-manner' and andererseits 'in-other-side-manner' — Seite ('side') fused with an adverbial ending, so it no longer looks like an ordinary noun phrase. zum einen...zum anderen and auf der einen Seite...auf der anderen Seite express exactly the same idea and follow the same verb-second order in each half — think of all three pairs as interchangeable ways to build a balanced two-sided argument.
