Lesson 14.1A1

Negation: nicht vs. kein

ನಿಷೇಧ: nicht vs kein

German splits 'not' into two words depending on what's being negated — nicht for verbs/adjectives, kein for indefinite nouns — where Kannada handles most negation through one compact family of markers regardless of what's negated.

Grammar Comparison

ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ

Two negation words, one job split by target

German

Ich habe kein Buch. (I don't have a book — kein negates the noun) vs. Ich lese nicht. (I'm not reading — nicht negates the verb)

Kannada

ನನಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇಲ್ಲ. / ನಾನು ಓದುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. (ಇಲ್ಲ and the verb suffix -ಇಲ್ಲ both come from the same negation root, regardless of target)

Kannada negates almost everything through one small family of markers built on ಇಲ್ಲ — the standalone word ಇಲ್ಲ ('doesn't exist/doesn't have') or the verb suffix -ಇಲ್ಲ (ಓದುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, 'is not reading') — without needing to ask what kind of word is being negated. German forces a choice: kein negates a noun that would otherwise take ein/no article (kein Buch, 'no book'), while nicht negates everything else — verbs, adjectives, definite nouns, adverbs. Before negating a German sentence, ask 'am I negating an indefinite noun, or something else?' — that answer picks kein or nicht.
