Same subject vs. different subject decides the tool
Ich spreche laut, um verstanden zu werden. (I speak loudly to be understood) vs. Ich spreche laut, damit du mich verstehst. (I speak loudly so that YOU understand me)

Tamil's purpose constructions don't split by 'same subject vs. different subject' the way German does — the same suffix pattern covers both. German requires um...zu only when the subject of the purpose and the subject of the main clause are identical; the moment a second, different person is involved (du in the example), um...zu becomes ungrammatical and damit takes over, opening its own subordinate clause with its own subject and a verb pushed to the end. Before choosing between them, always ask: is the 'purpose' person the same as the main subject, or someone else?
