Conditionnel Présent: Hypotheticals & Polite Requests
English 'would' does double duty for hypotheticals and, less often, politeness ('would you...?'). French conditionnel présent is a fully conjugated verb form (not a helper word) built on the same irregular stems as futur simple, and it's the everyday way to soften a request — je voudrais rather than the blunter je veux, much like English 'I would like' already sounds politer than 'I want'.

Formation: same stem as futur simple + imparfait endings

Conditionnel présent uses exactly the same stems as futur simple (including all the same irregulars: je serais, j'aurais, j'irais, je ferais...) but swaps the future's endings for imparfait's endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient). Because the stems are shared with futur simple, the two are easy to mix up when writing quickly — double-check the ending, not just the stem, to tell them apart.
Hypothetical and polite use — a close match to English 'would/could'
Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. / Pourriez-vous m'aider ?
I would like a coffee, please. / Could you help me?
This is one of the more intuitive corners of French grammar for an English speaker: je voudrais softens je veux exactly the way English 'I would like' softens 'I want', and pourriez-vous softens a direct request the same way English 'could you' softens 'can you'. The politeness logic transfers directly — the main task is just learning the French conjugations, not relearning a new register strategy.
The result clause of a hypothetical si-sentence
Si j'avais de l'argent, j'achèterais une maison.
If I had money, I would buy a house.
Conditionnel présent is also the standard 'would' half of a hypothetical if-sentence (fully covered in lesson 33). Again, the English if-clause pattern ('if I had...I would...') mirrors this construction closely, making it one of the few places where French and English conditional logic line up almost exactly.
