Lesson 38.01B1

Work & Career

Work & Career

B1 workplace French moves past simply naming a job (covered back at A1) into talking about the job itself — applying, interviewing, describing responsibilities, and discussing career changes.

postuler à / pour un poste — applying for a position

French

J'ai postulé pour ce poste la semaine dernière.

English

I applied for this position last week.

postuler pairs with pour (or, less commonly, à) before the position — postuler pour un emploi, postuler à un poste — and is the standard verb for 'to apply', distinct from candidater (more formal/administrative) and demander (too generic, not used this way). English 'apply for' always takes 'for', so English instinct correctly points toward pour most of the time — but don't assume 'apply for' maps onto a single fixed French preposition in every context, since postuler à is an equally valid alternative.
